Burgazada

Burgazada is the third largest of the Princes’ Islands, lying approximately nine miles from Istanbul, and receives only a small number of visitors compared to Büyükada. Ferries depart from Kabataş, Bostancı, Eminönü and Kadıköy, and as the ferry journey goes by the other islands, it is important to check the timetable before you go and remember the last boat back. The pier is in the middle of the village and there is a row of fish restaurants right next to it; you can have a good meal within two minutes of arriving and will not need to make any plans for the rest of the day.

There aren’t many places of interest on the island, a circumstance that is generally acceptable to the majority of visitors. The principal site is Aya Yani Church, which was constructed in 867 and had, underneath the building, a cell that was used to imprison people. Take a walk along the peaceful streets past the Ottoman wooden houses and then continue on the path up to Bayraktepe Hill for a view over the Sea of Marmara. Although a forest fire in 2003 left the hilltop rather bare, you should still have the bench to yourself. It’s a good idea to bring water and snacks since the climb is only short but there is nothing for sale at the top.

To reach the coastal area, walk along the north side to the Kalpazankaya area in the western part, which takes about half an hour on foot. Local people go there to see the sunset and there is a restaurant offering reasonable prices nearby. The beaches on the island are made of stone, so if you intend to swim you should bring water shoes. Although entry is free, you have to pay for lounge chairs and umbrellas. If you prefer not to walk, electric carriages are available to run between the main locations, as cars are not part of the island’s lifestyle.

If possible, visit during a weekday between May and September and go early. On weekends there are more people from Istanbul around the area, and by lunchtime the seafood tables near the pier are full. Half a day will suffice for eating, climbing the hill and seeing the church. If you would like to have a slower lunch and some time to sit by the water before the final ferry, then spend a full day on the trip.
